Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photographers

Sun 11.05.2006

Each year Getty Images gives out 100,000 to five photographers (20,000) each and we just finished the judging session for the latest round. The final judging session took place at Getty Images, New York and was directed by Aidan Sullivan, VP of Photographer Relations and myself.

All submissions consisted of a project proposal and images to support the project. Our judges were Susan Smith, Deputy Director of Photography at National Geographic; Tony Chambers, Creative Director at Wallpaper Magazine; and Eliane Laffont, Editorial Director HFP. The judging session was incredibly inspiring and insightful. The winners and their projects will be announced at Visa Por in Perpignan, France this September.

Next week I will be traveling to France with Getty Images! Here are some pictures of the place where we are staying.

Over the last 17 years Visa pour l’Image, the International Photojournalism Festival in Perpignan, France has built on its international notoriety to become known as a premier European photojournalism exhibition that prides itself on originality. I have heard it is an incredibly inspiring festival and a great place to meet with some of the most brilliant people in the photo industry.

Catherine Hall Studios hits the big screen!

Sun 11.05.2006

On June 8, 2oo6 we covered the NASDAQ Closing Bell Ceremony and the annual Reuters Remix Redux Party. Our images of the events graced the Reuters screen (the largest digital display in the world) and the NASDAQ screen (towering 21 stories). Images included VIPs, party guests and entertainers, such as Michelle Branch of the Wreckers. These images also appeared in the New York Times on the following Monday (Download ny_times_article_2.pdf) and the July WPPI newsletter.

Sharon Harris, the director of marketing at Reuters, was so pleased with the photographs that she decided to publish her first book using only our images. The book is scheduled to go to print this week and looks fantastic! I would like to thank my second photographer, Eric Kragh, and my production specialist, Justin Heiman, for doing such an incredible job. I couldn’t have done it without them.

Catherine Hall is editor for Steve McCurry Workshop

Sun 11.05.2006

This weekend I participated in Steve McCurry’s workshops as an onsite editor for the students. The workshop went really well and it was a lot of fun to work with the students. It was also great to see Steve as he is often on the road creating legendary imagery.

Marcus Bell visits New York and me at Getty Images

Sat 11.04.2006

I was very happy to pick up Marcus Bell at Penn Station last week for his trip to the big city. We had an incredible time; went to parties, dinner gatherings, bars, and I showed him around my office – Getty Images. While he was in the city he did a seminar, which was exceptional. He has incredible imagery and such a Big Warm heart.
