Mon 11.01.2010

EndingPress.jpgAustralian-based Better Photoshop Techniques Magazine is a must-have for tech-geek photographers with a penchant for post-production. One of my longtime favorite publications, I am incredibly excited for my body of Burning Man photography to be featured as their latest cover story! The eight-page spread includes a thoughtful interview and a sumptuous retrospective of my work. I am honored to included in such an educational and inspiring publication!

Big News from New York City

Wed 10.27.2010

Novogratz Pad.jpg
While it’s always fun to travel, traveling as a photographer tops everything. For the next two weeks, I’m coming at you live from New York City, where commissions, corporate clients, and the PDN PhotoPlus Conference will help me feel like I’m back home…which I am! In New York, I got my start as a professional photographer, and although I returned to my California roots and moved back to San Francisco a few years ago, I divide my time equally between the Big Apple and the Golden State.

Last week, I posed the question: “What the #&%$ does the Novogratz family have to do with Catherine Hall?

The time has come to share my good news! (I’m talking oh-my-gosh, unbridled excitement.) For 72 hours, I will be staying in the West Village with famed wife-and-husband designers Cortney and Rob Novogratz (along with their seven children, ranging from their youngest infant to their oldest late-adolescent). They live in this apartment, which they created themselves:

The founders of Sixx Design and stars of Bravo’s artsy reality show, 9 by Design, Cortney and Rob have been featured in The New York Times, GQ, Forbes, and more. They’re insanely brilliant interior architects with an enormous brood, and they make their livelihood by moving into decrepit, last-leg homes (kids in tow), transforming them from the ground-up, and selling them for $20 million. It’s this unique concept coupled with their bohemian-luxury style that makes Cortney and Robert so captivating.

Over Halloween weekend, I’m shacking up the Novogratz’, where I will be documenting their lives around-the-clock, along with a few seated portraiture sessions. Creatively, I’m interested in befriending this power-team to learn more about what makes them tick, to spend time in the recently renovated home (I mean, seriously, they’ve included a couch designed by Zaha Hadid–seriously?), and to witness the madness that is a nine-member household. I’m fascinated by the family as a cultural phenomenon and particularly curious about the kids that Cortney and Robert are raising. My photo project is motivated by psychological inquiry, pop history, and a fine-arts sensibility.

Wish me luck in the (so very chic) fray!

Pictorial Recap: A Day in the Mountains

Sun 10.24.2010

Recently, I spent a gorgeous weekend at the PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn, where I was invited to speak at A Day in the Mountains. Hosted by event planners at One Fine Day, the weekend featured fantastic food, sumptuous quarters, and delightful people. It was a real honor to speak alongside the illustrious Scott Corridan, who presented a high-minded lecture, called–um–Boobs and Butts.

What do the Novogratzes have to do with CHS?

Tue 10.12.2010

07novo-600.jpgCortney and Robert Novogratz are life partners cut from a rare, peculiar (dare-I-say enviable) cloth. They are hip, successful, madly in love, artistically savvy, and–oh, did I mention that they are the uber-cool, competent parents of seven, precocious mini-Novogratzes?

Hailing from the South, Cortney and Robert relocated to New York City to establish Sixx Design. With their seven children in tow (Sixx Design was named a few years before the seventh), the wife-and-husband home-design team buy and move into a house, renovate, and up-sell. They have transformed countless homes, apartments, flats, hotels, vacant lots, and even entire blocks (sometimes from the ground-up) in the city, upstate New York,
Massachusetts, and Brazil.

With tres fabu details like a sofa created by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid or a rococo-styled chandelier from a Paris thrift-store, Cortney and Robert apply their alchemy to create bohemian-luxury, an irresistible combination that echoes the couple’s fine taste and artistic boldness.

What’s more, their family funhouse is the subject of a new, Bravo reality show, aptly titled 9 by Design.
Obviously, I’m totally sold on the Novogratz family–I mean, can I buy one of your houses, please?! That said, what in the world do they have to do with Catherine Hall Studios? Well, in a sense, everything. At least for Halloween weekend. I absolutely cannot wait to tell you what’s going down in a few weeks… I’m just not going to tell you, yet!

Watch this video to get acquainted with my new friends and stay tuned!
