The John Deere Way of Life

Tue 05.17.2011

This was a photograph from a commercial shoot for John Deere and the original concept was to illustrate how the brand is not just about equipment, but a way of life. I was interested to capture the lifestyle of people who depend on John Deere for their livelihood and was not satisfied with the provided models. With that goal in mind, my assistant and I drove around to get some inspiration and we found a Mennonite family who was just perfect for the shoot. I chose to illustrate the lifestyle of farmers including generational loyalty to the exclusive brand. This image of the Mennonite family is the perfect representation of how John Deere equipment is an important fixture in users’ lives.

Tibetan Refugee Monk, Age 4

Tue 05.10.2011

Kodak Ecktachrome E100g | 50mm | 1/125 | f/4

In another life, my photography sojourn to India brought me to a temple bordering India and Nepal – it was one of the most memorable trips of my life. The Tibetan refugee monks were so gracious and kind to me – and even invited me, a total stranger, to their solemn puja session, where they chanted en masse and offered prayers to the world. I studied opera singing for 5 years – and I was so inspired I decided to fill the temple with my own melodic hymn. The acoustics of the temple were extraordinary and made the moment simply magical. This image captures the youngest monk at the temple among his older mentors.

Tallulah + Starsi, Age 12

Tue 05.03.2011

Canon EOS 5D Mark II  |  26mm  |  1/125  |  f/5.6

Tallulah Novogratz, 12, and her best friend, Starsi Marie Howell drenched in paint in the Novogratz family home tub. I wanted to depict the strong bond and playful intimacy between best girlfriends during those vulnerable teen years – where you’re not quite a child, but not yet an adult. Tallulah was the art director of this shoot and came up with the idea to use paint. I should have known that the Novogratz’s 12-year-old would be a better art director than me.

*The Novogratz family is headed by successful interior designers, Robert and Cortney, owners of New York’s Sixx Design.

Beautiful, Perfect, Darling Baby Girl | My Niece

Fri 11.12.2010

babe.jpg Jacqueline Quinn Balducci | Born October 21, 2010 | 7 lbs | 20.5 inches

Would you look at my gorgeous, beautiful, perfect baby niece?! Only a few days old in this photograph, my darling Jacqueline is my new joy… and namesake! Bet you didn’t know that my given, legal name is actually Jacqueline. It was once too difficult for my older sister to pronounce, and when she began calling me Cath – Win, it stuck. Catherine.

Being an aunt to little Jacqueline is more special than I ever could have imagined. It might sound trite, but it’s true: You don’t know how important children are until they are a part of your life. I love my little Jacqueline and send my sincere admiration and love to my ever-growing family!

Happy Friday! xoxo

Burning Man Through Your Eyes

Thu 11.04.2010

56_BM08_Day01_036-2.jpgI saw your photos on metal at BM and they are painfully beautiful. I wish I could look at them all the time, any way of purchasing prints?

53_0206_BurningMan_2009crop.jpg Thank you so much for making me a subject in your art project. I freaked when I came across it on Esplanade. It was by far the best gift I have ever received on the Playa. Thank you for displaying our energy on the Playa. When I stumbled upon the exhibition on Thursday, I happened to be wearing the same pants. It was so awesome – everybody swarmed around me and wanted pictures. Thank you so much for everything.
