Self-proclaimed non-specialist Rick Sammon displays an infectious enthusiasm for photography of any kind, which makes him a pleasure to work with and one of the most exceptional educators in the industry. I had the opportunity to see both of these this week on TWiT Photo, when he “pulled a Kelby” – that is, he gave us a live in-studio demo. (The term has become famous with the TWiT Photo crew ever since Scott Kelby took the initiative to pull us off of the set for our first live demo.) With one little piece of cardboard and an eager hand from Leo, this Canon Explorer of Light showed us how to make magic simply by taking the flash off of the camera – I was stunned by the difference it could make! I expected no less, though; we’ve had the honor of seeing Rick on TWiT in the past, and last Monday, he displayed a similar genius when I modeled for his demo to Google’s photography club. Check back soon for a video from that talk!

Don’t forget to check out Rick’s CreativeLIVE Workshop, Exploring the Light, this weekend, where I’ll join him to talk about creating your own opportunities when crafting inspiring portraits. Here are his top tips on TWiT Photo:

“Take the darn flash off the camera!”

“Lighting illuminates, shadow defines.”

“The closer you are to a subject, the more intimate the portrait becomes.”

When you meet Sue Bryce, you can’t help but be captivated by her tenacity that has helped her build a successful business capturing the glamour and femininity of real women. During my shoot with her (yes, me on the other side of the lens!), she took charge and directed me with absolute ease and confidence – I learned invaluable posing tips from her that taught me how to emphasize the most flattering angles using natural light. See my innate sexiness revealed in a special shoot with the Australian Portrait Photographer of the Year (watch out for our Behind The Scenes coverage on my blog next week). Also, Sue shares her secrets to creating stunning beauty portraits – using only her trusty $15 reflectors and no more than 2 minutes of retouching. Here are her three top tips:

“Learn how to pose real women.”

“Stay away from the “liquify” tool in Photoshop.”

“Chin forward and down for the model.”

TWiT Photo Ep. 27 with Tamara Lackey

Fri 10.07.2011

Navigating pesky little tots during a photo shoot can be tricky – Tamara Lackey’s protocol for manner-minding parents? “This is not the time to be raising moral humans.” You usually don’t associate the word “ballsy” with children portrait photographers, but Tamara’s not only a “ballsy” shooter dedicated to getting the perfect shot, she also doesn’t let anything get in the way of connecting with her subjects. Get this: she doesn’t have an assistant and holds her own reflector in addition to her 5D camera and somehow manages to get kids to relax and just have fun. Watch Tamara in action with her ninja moves and yes, you can’t help a few “awws” and “so cute” while viewing her authentic images of children. Here are her top tips:

“Meet the child where they are.”

“Look for light around you.”

“Don’t settle for cheese. Don’t settle for pre-conditioned response.”

Much to the delight of our TWiT Photo viewers, Dutch fashion and glamour photographer Frank Doorhof pulled a Scott Kelby – several times – during the show this week. With an entire crew (including his wife) in tow, Frank explained his technique and process using a live demo shoot with a gorgeous model in his studio. Way to upstage Scott, Frank! Don’t miss the chance to learn from the Kelby Media Training instructor and find out why the lighting whiz never goes anywhere without his Sekonic light meter. Here’s Frank’s top three tips during the show:

“Learn to master your light meter.”

“Why fake it, when you can create it.”

“Make sure a background is white and not nuclear.”

In his decades-long career as a photojournalist then documentary photographer, Steve Simon has traversed the world, using his camera and passionate spirit to work on projects that bring about social change. His evocative portraits, such as his work on AIDS in Africa, have the ability to transport you into that exact moment, place, where you immediately get a sense of the raw emotions surrounding the circumstances of the shot. It was a great honor to have Steve as our TWiT Photo guest this week – where he doled out invaluable anecdotes on becoming a passionate photographer and always seizing opportunities for the perfect shot. Don’t miss Steve at the launch of his book, The Passionate Photographer, at B&H on Oct. 26 in New York. Here’s Steve’s top three tips during the show:

“Do the compositional dance and move in closer.”

“Boldly find your camera position.”

“Find a project or theme and dig deeper, an inch wide, mile deep.”
