A broken needle on a dirty floor; a bloody
handprint on a white wall; open surgery without gloves -
daily scenes in the Viet Duc ICU in Hanoi, Vietnam. Early
in the afternoon a six-year-old boy dies needlessly of snakebite.
A readily available antidote, costing five U.S. dollars
- the price of a deluxe coffee at Starbucks - could have
prevented his death. But his family does not have enough
money to pay for it.
As a result of numerous years of volunteer
work, American Veteran Dr. Dan Berliner has initiated an
Emergency Health Care program to help prevent unnecessary
deaths such as this one. Dr. Berliner and several non-profit
organizations used my photographs of Vietnamese hospitals
to bring awareness and induce overseas funding to improve
the health care infrastructure in Vietnam.
